Now that the official word is out and our hopes of seeing how the fabulous foursome’s stories end have definitely been crushed, we can’t help but wonder: what the *beeping beep* happened?!
Following what seemed like an eternity of whisperings of the third Sex And The City movie being in the works, allowing the global following of die-hard fans to get some long awaited closure, the franchise’s principal star and executive producer, Sarah Jessica Parker, 52, confirmed that, despite there being a “beautiful, funny, heartbreaking, joyful, very relatable script and story,” the movie will not (we repeat, NOT!) be happening, which she then said was “disappointing.”
The collective heartbreak of fans across the planet was interrupted by reports that the reason behind this devastating statement was the show’s other major star – Kim Cattrall. The actress, 61, was reportedly the only blocking factor standing in the way of the final chapter of the most beloved cultural phenomena and successful franchises of all time.
Cattrall, 61, did not shy way from coming forward and explained her site of the behind-the-scenes drama during a talk show appearance, where she dropped some not-so-tepid bombs – and a quite direct jab at Parker, saying that “she could have been nicer,” referencing the manner in which the talk of the third movie (and it’s ultimate shutdown) was handled by SATC producers.
The actress stressed the fact that her message of not wanting any further involvement with the franchise and the role of Samantha Jones, which she sassily portrayed for 20 years, for very “firm” and direct from the first time she was approached about it – nearly a year ago.
“And now, now at this very moment it’s quite extraordinary to get any kind of negative press about something that I’ve been saying for almost a year of ‘no’ that I’m demanding or a diva,” she noted, adding later that she doesn’t know “what her issue is, I never have,” when asked again about the long-speculated volatile relationship between herself and Parker. She later compared the entire ordeal to a “toxic relationship.”
The actress also addressed the allegations of being unfairly branded as a “diva” and the reason behind the film not being made, by suggesting a variety of ideas on how the producers can handle her decision to not participate – anything from recasting the character of Sam Jones as a black or Hispanic character, to killing her off entirely to introducing another character altogether, which, she said, “is what I really believe that this franchise needs another point of view and this could be it.”
Quite frankly, regardless of the third film seeing the light of day or not, we’re really not into this catty, passive-aggressive grudge match.
Can’t the legacy of the ladies we adored so dearly not be smeared by this unnecessary nonsense?
The verdict is still out, we suppose.
We’ll keep our Cosmos and Manolos handy, just in case this fabulous gang comes to their senses.
